FIFA World Cup Group F: Slovakia 3 v 2 Italy

Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg, June 24th 2010

sunny 48 °F

Slovakia!!! I love it! Sensational game!

This result saw Slovakia finish second in Group F, eliminating holders Italy who failed to win in South Africa.

Robert Vittek scored a goal in each half for Slovakia, who needed a win to guarantee their passage into the knockout stages in their first World Cup.

With a little under 10 minutes remaining, Antonio Di Natale pulled one back for the Italy, who themselves needed a draw to progress, but Slovakia substitute Kamil Kopunek restored their two-goal advantage.

Fabio Quagliarella coolly chipped in a second for the Azzurri in injury time to ensure a frantic finale, but Slovakia held out.

Both 2006 Finalists are gone before the round of 16! New Zealand remained unbeaten and finished above Italy!

That's why football is the world's greatest game!

FIFA World Cup Group C: USA 1 v 0 Algeria

Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Tshwane/Pretoria, June 23rd 2010

sunny 46 °F

Landon Donovan's dramatic stoppage-time goal secured a narrow victory over Algeria and fired the United States into the last 16 of the World Cup as group winners.

The US were on the brink of going out of the competition when Donovan followed up a sharp save from goalkeeper Raid Ouheb M'bolhi in the 92nd minute to smash the ball home.

Until that moment it had been a story of inspired saves from M'bolhi, poor American finishing and a lineman's error, which denied Clint Dempsey a goal in the first half.

But Donovan's late intervention delivered a deserved victory, which pushed England into second place in Group C on goals scored following their 1-0 victory over Slovenia.

FIFA World Cup Group H: Spain 2 v 0 Honduras

Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg, June 21st 2010

sunny 46 °F

We saw the best footballing side in the World Cup by far tonight. Slick passing Spain outpassed and outclassed the resilient Hondurans, scored two goals but could have had ten! Hopefully they will not regret their profligacy in front of goal tonight.

FIFA World Cup Group G: Brazil 3 v 1 Ivory Coast

Soccer City Johannesburg, June 20th 2010

The big game that failed to live up to expectations. Colorful crowd, but very little atmosphere and a poor game of football for the neutral spectator. A disappointment
