FIFA World Cup Group F: Slovakia 3 v 2 Italy
Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg, June 24th 2010
06.24.2010 - 06.25.2010
48 °F
Slovakia!!! I love it! Sensational game!
This result saw Slovakia finish second in Group F, eliminating holders Italy who failed to win in South Africa.
Robert Vittek scored a goal in each half for Slovakia, who needed a win to guarantee their passage into the knockout stages in their first World Cup.
With a little under 10 minutes remaining, Antonio Di Natale pulled one back for the Italy, who themselves needed a draw to progress, but Slovakia substitute Kamil Kopunek restored their two-goal advantage.
Fabio Quagliarella coolly chipped in a second for the Azzurri in injury time to ensure a frantic finale, but Slovakia held out.
Both 2006 Finalists are gone before the round of 16! New Zealand remained unbeaten and finished above Italy!
That's why football is the world's greatest game!
